Morphine is our friend

Mom has been having some abdominal pain-- which is really the first significant pain she has had since her original cancer diagnosis. The nurses have had her on morphine since last night, so she has been very sleepy today. So sleepy, in fact, that she kept falling asleep when I was talking to her on the phone. But she says she is feeling good.

Friday, 8:30 AM

Just called Hospice of the Piedmont (434 244 4250) to check on Peg. She is sleeping comfortably and has had no morphine since yesterday. The nurse suggested calling Peg around 10:00 AM.

Just came from Hospice. Had a great visit and was able to help Peg with her lunch. The nurse says they usually feed the patients around noon. If you want to help Peg eat, the staff welcomes the help, and I think Peg will end up eating more too!

Peg commented today that she had had great visits with Jamie and Chip. She was very thankful to be able to talk with them.

Peg's room at Hospice is beautiful! I think Peg is very happy to have such lovely, peaceful quarters. We watched the dogwood petals flying in the breeze from the windows.

*I just saw Peg, she was very sleepy. The nurse said she'd had morphine early this morning.
She knew who I was and made sense, just kept falling asleep.
*The staff is very attentive, came right away when she needed something.
*She had another visitor there when I arrived.
*She has beautiful flowers: calla lillies; carnations; an orchid. *Her room is bright and sunny, lots of windows. She was holding her bunny by it's ear and the kitten was nearby.
*I asked her if she missed doing pills ID's and talking about Desitin and silica gel and she said, "oh, yeah" I'm pretty sure that was sarcasm; that's our Peg!

I just called Hospice House, the nurse said Peg was more awake today, is oriented, comfortable, smiling and talking some with visitors.
Love and prayers,
Kathy
